The American Red Cross Illinois Capital Area Chapter is holding a Volunteer Orientation this Thursday, September 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. at the Red Cross Office, 1045 Outer Park, Springfield. Attending this class is the first step required to become a Red Cross volunteer. The class is open to anyone who lives in Sangamon, Christian, Logan, Menard, Macoupin or Montgomery County and is interested in volunteering. To register, call (217) 787-7602.

| Cannabis plants seized at street value of $100,000 |
On September 8, a joint investigation between the Central Illinois Enforcement Group, the Christian County Sheriff's Office, and the Pana Police Department has resulted in the arrest of Kevin E. Binkley, 51, of Taylorville, for production of cannabis plants at the Sangchris Lake State Park in South Fork Township. On September 7, surveillance was conducted at Sangchris Lake State Park.

The Golden Circle Nutrition Program (GCNP) has served meals at the Christian County Senior Center since 1976, and program organizers plan to keep food on the table.

| Last Taylorville Evening Meal held at Roundtable |
The Taylorville Evening Meal, a program sponsored by the Golden Circle nutrition Program (GCNP), has had its fill at the Roundtable. Program funds have run out, after serving 200-240 people on Wednesdays. Eighty people attended the first dinner in February, at the Roundtable Cafe in Taylorville, and the last meal was enjoyed on September 1, 2010.

The C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation began taking applications for the 2011 Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) on September 1, 2010. September and October are priority months reserved for those households that have either a member aged 60 and above, disabled or are disconnected from their utilities.

United Way of Christian County Caring Leaders met in Taylorville for their first organizational meeting of the 2010-2011 Campaign. This year's goal is set at $135,000 after exceeding the goal last year of $128,000.

| ACT: Illinois testing more than 90% of students |
The number of high school students taking the ACT has reached a record high in Illinois, and the average ACT score shows room for improvement. At the same time indications point to small achievements in statewide efforts to increase student learning, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) announces the graduating class of 2010's composite ACT score is the highest of the eight states that test 90 percent or more of their students. The 2010 average Illinois ACT score of 20.7 compares to the 2010 national average ACT score of 20.9. Illinois' composite score of 20.7 reflects an upward trend over the past five years and an urgent need to increase student learning across the board.

| Kiwanis members hear from Historical Society president |
Jodi Heberling, president of the Christian County Historical Society, was the guest speaker at the weekly meeting of the Taylorville Kiwanis Club at the Taylorville Memorial Hospital Auditorium. Heberling shared with Kiwanis members the ongoing efforts of the Historical Society, in preserving the county's rich history, through the many buildings at its location located at Routes 29 and 48 on the east side of Taylorville.

Georgia Faye's husband has written a book, entitled Georgia Faye, about her life after she passed away in 1949. The book portrays seven decades and begins with her life as a child, growing up in Morrisonville. Georgia Faye will relate some of her memories as a child and about life in Morrisonville in the 1880's and 1890's.
