Museum of the Grand Prairie opens new education center

MAHOMET, Ill. — The Museum of the Grand Prairie is excited to announce the opening of its Education Center. The 4,500 square foot expansion includes a classroom, collection storage and new restrooms. The public is invited to an Open House from 2 - 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 3.

The expansion connects the main building with the office annex and greatly increases the amount of storage space for the museum’s collections and offers great opportunities for the staff and educators. The museum hosts 4,000 students from schools around Illinois throughout the year and holds lecture series in the spring and fall. The addition of the new classroom includes an interactive computerized projection system, sound system and Wi-Fi connection to enhance the educational experience provided by the museum.

The new state-of-the-art compact mobile storage unit works to maximize ideal storage conditions for more than a third of the museum’s collection. The room is temperature and humidity controlled allowing for the perfect setting for artifacts.

The Museum of the Grand Prairie received a $500,000 Public Museum Capital Grant from the State of Illinois for this expansion and the balance provided by capital funds and fundraising efforts.

For the remainder of 2012, the Museum of the Grand Prairie is open daily from 1 - 5 p.m.

The Museum of the Grand Prairie is a facility of the Champaign County Forest Preserve District and is located on Route 47, 1/2 mile north of I-74 at Mahomet. The CCFPD provides conservation, education and recreation  and manages more than 3,800 acres of open space located at Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve, Mahomet; River Bend Forest Preserve, Mahomet; Homer Lake Forest Preserve, Homer; Middle Fork River Forest Preserve, Penfield; and Sangamon River Forest Preserve, Fisher.
