Join in Sing-along-a Sound of Music for some kitschy fun

SPRINGFIELD — After you've finished your Thanksgiving dinner and your Black Friday shopping, head over to the Hoogland Center for the Arts on Friday night, November 23 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday night, November 24 at 7:00 p.m. for laughs, fun and singing with Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music!

Having started in the UK back in 1999, the Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music show has now become a worldwide hit, playing to packed houses across the globe with over 10,000 performances in eleven different countries. It’s even filled the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles – seven times!

Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music is not just a chance to see the classic movie on the big screen; it’s a major audience participation event with subtitles for all the songs.  Johnny Molson will lead the audience through a vocal warm up and give a comprehensive guide to the accompanying actions and use of the interactive funpack. The costume parade has been known to send audiences into frenzy. Sing-a-long-a attendees have dressed up as anything and everything represented in the classic film. Previous entries have included: Nuns of both genders (including a pregnant nun!), girls (and boys!) in white dresses with blue satin sashes, a lonely Goatherd, a man in a gold lycra catsuit (Ray - a drop of golden sun), a man dressed in work overalls and a tool belt (Chris the Plumber), a gazebo and a carburetor.

So get those vocal chords warmed up, cut up those chintz curtains and hurry down for another dose of the international smash-hit sensation! It’s the perfect night out for birthday celebrations, office outings, family trips, or for anyone who has ever shed a tear during “Edelweiss!”

Tickets for this fun event are just $15, and can be purchased at the Hoogland Center for the Arts box office at 420 South Sixth Street in Springfield. You can also order tickets by phone at (217) 523-2787 or online at www.hcfta.org.

“The Holly and the Ivy” Nov. 30-Dec. 2

The following weekend, November 30 – December 2, the Hoogland Center for the Arts, Over the Moon Productions and WUIS will present “The Holly and the Ivy”, an award winning 1950 British drama by Wynyard Browne.

“The Holly and the Ivy” is a captivating Christmas tale with a difference. Browne’s play, set in 1940s Norfolk, England, begins on Christmas Eve and slowly unfolds over 24 hours, during which time secrets are revealed, skeletons are wrenched out of closets, and lives are changed forever.

“The Holly and the Ivy” will be presented in the Club Room at the Hoogland Center for the Arts on Friday, November 30 at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, December 1 at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, December 2 at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $17 for seniors and students. Call (217) 523-2787, or log on to www.hcfta.org, for more information.
