WAVERLY, Iowa — The Wartburg College Castle Singers will be performing in Springfield on Wednesday, April 24, on their four-state national tour.
The 33-member jazz ensemble will be singing at Grace Lutheran Church, 714 E Capitol Ave., at 7 p.m. Admission is a free-will donation. The Castle Singers are the only U.S. Lutheran college choir of its kind.
The “Jazz for all Seasons” section of the program will feature songs like “Summertime” by George Gershwin and “It Might as Well Be Spring” by Richard Rodgers. The “World of Jazz” set includes music from composers around the world.
Also in the repertoire is “Jazz Mass” by composer Craig Curry of Wichita, Kan., which was commissioned for the Castle Singers.
“The Jazz Mass has been wonderful because it provides an avenue for the Castle Singers to lead worship,” said Dr. Jane Andrews, Castle Singers director and professor of music. “It is the complete liturgy set in very sophisticated, but ‘hip,’ musical styles of jazz.”
Wartburg College is a selective liberal arts college of the Lutheran church (ELCA) and internationally recognized for community engagement. Nearly 450 of its 1,747 students are involved with its three touring ensembles and other musical groups.
