DECATUR — The Macon County Conservation District invites you to the Rock Springs Nature Center to learn about “The Early Gunsmiths of Central Illinois” presented by author, gunsmith and historian Curtis L. Johnson on Sunday, July 21 at 2:00 p.m. Admission is free.
During the 1800s Macon County and surrounding counties were the home of several craftsmen who made rifles and shotguns. Learn about these relatively unknown men who produced firearms both for peacetime and war. Guest speaker Curtis L. Johnson is a gunsmith, historian and author of a two-volume book, “Gunmakers of Illinois, 1683-1900”. He has restored antique guns for more than 40 years.
Rock Springs Conservation Area is located on the southwestern edge of Decatur. To get to Rock Springs from Taylorville, go north on Route 48 and turn east onto Rock Springs Road. Watch for signs. Plenty of parking is available.
