A different kind of poetry slam at Lindsay Home March 23

SPRINGFIELD — The powerful poetry of “Slamming Open the Door” is coming to the Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site to mark Women’s History Month.

“Slamming Open the Door” was written by Kathleen Sheeder Bonanno about her daughter’s murder and its aftermath. It will be performed Saturday, March 23, at 2 o’clock by local actress Linda Schneider.

The book won the Beatrice Hawley Award for poetry in 2008 and has garnered universal praise.

"From the unspeakable – the murder of her daughter – Kathleen Sheeder Bonanno creates a poetic sequence like no other. She is our Everywoman, holding church, family, and law to the light,” said poet Robin Becker.

The New York Times said, “To read this book is … to stand onstage with a writer who finds herself in the middle of a story in which she has been reluctantly cast.”

Bonanno teaches English and creative writing in Pennsylvania and is contributing editor at The American Poetry Review.

Linda Schneider has appeared in productions throughout central Illinois, including the Legacy Theater’s production of "Love Letters" and "Lincoln and Shakespeare" at the Old State Capitol State Historic Site. This summer, she’ll be directing South Pacific at Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site.

Admission to this “Poets in the Parlor” event is free, but seating is limited. Light refreshments will be served after the 45-minute performance.

The performance is co-sponsored by the Vachel Lindsay Association and the Vachel Lindsay Home State Historic Site.
