DECATUR — Stop by Sunday, October 6 at 2:00 p.m. at Homestead Prairie Farm as Governor Richard J. Oglesby, portrayed by Decatur resident Dick Torgerson, reminisces about his adventures as a '49er during the California Gold Rush
Oglesby traveled from Decatur to California with other local men in the hopes of striking gold. Admission is free to the farm and program.
Homestead Prairie Farm, a circa 1860 living history house museum, is located on the grounds of the Rock Springs Conservation Area in Decatur. In case of rain the program will be moved inside the Rock Springs Nature Center.
Dick Torgerson, a resident of Macon County and a long-time conservation district volunteer, has portrayed Governor Richard J. Oglesby for 18 years. He has spoken about Oglesby at various events throughout Illinois and frequently portrays the governor at the Governor Oglesby Mansion in Decatur. Torgerson, a small business owner and technical writer, is also an avid collector and speaker on antique sewing machines and hand tools.
To get to Rock Springs from Taylorville, go north on Route 48 and turn east onto Rock Springs Road. Watch for signs. Plenty of parking is available.
