Donald L. Swigert, 76, of Tremont passed away at 10:05 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born August 20, 1936 in Taylorville, IL, to Elmer L. and Betty M. Miller Swigert. He married Faraby J. Myers on September 25, 1955 in Stonington, IL. Donald worked 50 years in the grocery retail business spanning A&P, IGA, and Super Valu before retiring in May 2003. He was a member of Tremont Baptist Church, Tremont Lions Club, Tremont Commerce Association, and served on the Morton Community Bank Advisory Board. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed working in his yard, traveling, playing cards, was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan, and was noted for his keen sense of humor.
Surviving are his wife of Tremont; three daughters, Sharon Gathman of Manito, Beverly (Richard) Freehill of Tremont, and Susan Swigert of Bloomington; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Freehill, Justin (Shana Weston) Freehill, Melissa (Andrew) Gilson, Jeremy Freehill, Heidi (Matthew) Fleer, Joshua (Lauren) Freehill, and Brian Gathman; one great grandson, Ryan Gilson; three brothers, Lyle (Anne) Swigert of Stonington, Roy (Carole) Swigert and Wayne (Judy) Swigert, both of Taylorville. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Keith of Arlington, TX; one sister, Suzanne Walker of Warrensburg, IL.
His funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2013 at Tremont Baptist Church. Pastor Noah Lee will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Davis Mortuary in Tremont. Private burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville.
