Salah “Sam” Shehadeh, 67, of Taylorville, IL, passed away at 6:42 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at his home in Taylorville.
Salah was born on January 6, 1946 in Beit Nuba, near Jerusalem, Palestine. He moved to Abha Saudi Arabia in 1965 for a teaching position before immigrating to the United States in 1966. He lived in Chicago, IL and Miami, FL before moving to Springfield, IL in 1969 where he became a United States citizen. Salah was a born salesman who never met a stranger. Salah sold insurance for many years for various companies and was Prudential Salesman of the Year. He was active in numerous groups over the years including the Optimist Club, The Masons, and the YMCA. He had a particular passion for soccer and one of the great loves of his life was bringing soccer to the youth of his community.
Survivors include his daughter, Nora (Terry) George of Cocoa, FL; son, Jamal Shehadeh of Taylorville; daughter, Sara Shehadeh of Taylorville; grandsons, Tyler and Tanner George of Cocoa, FL; granddaughter Ellyanna Kiel of Taylorville; brothers, Ahmad, Anwar, Esam and Barkat of Amman Jordan; sister, Zaheeyah of New Beit Nuba; sisters, Miriam, Zahwa and Kareema of Amman Jordan, and a very large extended family living in England, Cuba, Palestine, Jordan, Saudia Arabia, Florida, California and Chicago. He was preceded in death by his mother, Fatima, father, Ali, brothers, Hikmat and Minwer, and son, Jacob.
Visitation will be from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. There will be a traditional Muslim burial at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 18th at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield for those who wish to attend.
