Betty Iola Bailey, 89, of Springfield, died Thursday, Feb. 9, 2017, at 3 a.m. at her daughter’s home in Taylorville, Ill.
Betty was born June 19, 1927, in Springfield, the daughter of Sherman J. and Mary A. Burch Martin. She married Charles J. Bailey on April 13, 1947, at the 2nd Nazarene Church in Springfield. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Charles in 2010; a brother, Sherman J. Martin Jr.; two sisters, Shirley Makinen and Mary Aymond.
Betty was a member of the Sherman Church of the Nazarene. She graduated from Feitshans High School. Betty retired as a supervisor in 1998 from the Springfield Police Dept. after 39 years of service to the City of Springfield.
She is survived by her daughter, Diana L. (husband, Jay) Denning of Taylorville; two sons, Charles J. (wife, Connie) Bailey Jr. and Ronald L. (wife, Paula) Bailey, both of Springfield; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; four step-grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and a special friend, Sharon Homer.
Betty’s family will meet friends Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017, from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12 p.m. at the Ellinger-Kunz & Park Funeral Home, 530 N. 5th Street, Springfield, Ill. 62702 with the Rev. Rich Kietzman officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
