Robert E. “Bob” Melzer, 84 of Stonington passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 8:10 p.m. at Prairie Rose Care Center in Pana. He was born on May 9, 1933 in Taylorville, Ill. the son of Conrad and Lora (Daugherty) Melzer. He married Rose Marie Crist on March 24, 1956 in Taylorville, Ill. and she preceded him in death on October 30, 2010. He worked as a machinist at Caterpillar in Decatur and he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Taylorville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict. He delivered the State Journal Register and Decatur Herald and Review for several years. Bob was also a crossing guard at the Stonington Grade School for several years. The family acknowledges the staff at Prairie Rose Care Center and the staff at Taylorville Estates for all their care for Bob.
Surviving are his son: Chris Melzer of Moweaqua, Ill.; grandchildren: Katie (Mark) Austin of Waterman, Ill.; Elizabeth (Stan) Kotus of Yorkville, Ill.; Shelby (Trent) Norville of Columbia, Mo.; great-grandchildren: William, Anabelle, Grant, Ellen Marie, Margaret, Levi, Amelia, Juliana and Scarlett; brother: Gerald (Shirley) Melzer of Decatur, Ill.; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, six brothers and four sisters.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 22, 2017 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. Funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Taylorville on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. with Pastor Rodney Blomquist officiating. Burial will be held in Old Stonington Cemetery in Stonington, Ill.
