John E. Horn, age 74, of Mattoon, IL, peacefully passed away at his residence Tuesday, October 31, 2017 at 7:00 P..M.
Funeral services honoring his life will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938. Visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. till the time of service. Reverend James Dona will be officiating. Interment will follow at Dodge Grove Cemetery.
John was born January 21, 1943 in Tonawanda, N.Y., the son of Clarence and Cora (Jones) Horn. He is survived by his two daughters: Angela Horn of Pana, Ill.; Danielle White and husband Paul of Pana, Ill.; one brother, Jim Horn and wife Judy of Effingham, Ill.; and five grandchildren: Bradly Horn of Evansville, Ind.; Andrew Deere of Pana, Ill.; Robert Deere of Pana, Ill.; Emily Deere of Pana, Ill., and Vincent Minard of Mason City, Iowa. He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Janet Lee.
Mr. Horn was a retired school teacher and coach at Kincaid High School in Kincaid, Ill. He also was a driver’s education teacher and football coach in Oviedo, Fla. at Oviedo High School, and former employee at General Electric for many years. John honorably served our country in the Army. He was a past member of the Elks Lodge in Mattoon, Ill., and active member of Mattoon Area Family YMCA where he could often be found walking and playing pickleball. To say he enjoyed sports is an understatement; he was passionate about all sports, especially St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland Raiders, Green Bay Packers, and the Fighting Illini. He took great pride in his children and grandchildren. He will be sadly missed.
