Mary Eleanor Denbow Speakman, 92, of Taylorville, died Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017, at the home of her son in Jacksonville.
She was born Apr. 6, 1925, in Pana, the daughter of Elmer and Anna Wolf Denbow. She married James Thomas Speakman on Sept. 26, 1943, in Taylorville, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 1998.
She is survived by two sons and one daughter: Jerry (Margaret) Speakman of Columbus, Ind., Larry (Judy) Speakman of Jacksonville, and Linda (John) Schutte of Carmel, Ind.; ten grandchildren, Sara, Susan, Lisa, Lori, Karen, Jill, Lucas, Jaime, Beth and Melissa; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and five nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one great grandson, Bryan Ray; and two brothers, Robert Denbow and Lewis Denbow.
Mrs. Speakman was a 1943 graduate of Pana High School. She was a member of Taylorville First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for 56 years. She worked at JC Penney and Lee Norris Co., both in Taylorville, and General Electric in Decatur, retiring in 1987. Mary was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels, and she enjoyed reading, knitting and playing games. In her younger years she loved to dance, bowl and camp. She and her husband were former members of the Taylorville Miner’s Camping Club.
A funeral service will be held 12 noon on Friday Dec. 22, 2017, at Taylorville First United Methodist Church, with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery.
