Gloyd E. “Doc” Askins, 91 of Pana, passed away Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Heritage Health in Pana. He was born March 8, 1926 in Lakewood, Ill. to Rohima Askins.
Doc served his country in the US Navy during WWII. He lived his entire life in the Pana area and worked for the Department of Transportation for 32 years. He enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals, was an avid gardener, was good with his hands and enjoyed spending his time tinkering around fixing things. He was also known for shooting a pretty good game of marbles. Of all these things, spending time with his family was the most important.
Doc married Jean Ashinhurst on December 27, 1950 in Bloomington, Ill. and she survives in Pana. Also surviving are his children: Anita (Allen) McGlauchlen of Oconee, Ill., Kathleen (Dave) Blain of Vandalia, Ill., Brenda (Ted) Jannink and Jeffrey Askins both of Pana, Ill.; grandchildren: Scott, Brian, Jamie, Kristy, Travis, Jason, Lyndsay, Layney, Lyshya; great-grandchildren: Morgan, Gavin, Olivia, Arabella, Dylan, Karlee, Laycen, Westyn, Bransyn, Emersyn, Gavin, Jared, Austin, Joey, Allison; great-great-grandchild Isabella; brother Kenneth (Anne) Minks of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his mother and step-father Rohima and Chet Minks; daughter Lori Askins; and brothers Chet, William, and Richard Minks.
Funeral Services for Doc will be held Friday, February 9, 2018 in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Kenneth Morell officiating. Burial will be in Owaneco Cemetery with graveside military rites by Pana Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be Friday, February 9, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. until time of the service of the funeral home.
