Joseph “Gene” Coady, 90, of Taylorville, died at 11:17 a.m. Sunday, February 25, 2018 peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Gene was born on September 20, 1927 in Taylorville, Illinois, to Joseph and Agnella (Durbin) Coady. He married Jeanette Podeschi on September 3, 1951 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Gene worked as a trimmer operator for the Georgia Pacific Paper Company until his retirement. Gene served in the US Army in occupied Japan immediately after WWII. He enjoyed the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight in 2013. He was a member of Taylorville VFW Post 4495. Gene was an avid Scrabble player and a St. Louis Cardinal fan. In his later years, Gene enjoyed his lunch group and coffee group with friends and former classmates. He was a life member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He was a devoted grandpa who loved spending time with his family, and he will be dearly missed.
Gene is survived by his loving wife Jeanette of 66 years, their children: John (Kathy) Coady of Taylorville, Diane (Ed) Tirey of Taylorville, Kathryn (Randy) Mitchelson of Taylorville, Cheryl Fahl (Kirk Vince) of Ft. Myers, Florida; grandchildren: Craig (Darcy) Coady, Maureen (Mike) Magnussen, Andrea (Daniel) Dutt, Kevin (Jennifer) Tirey, Brian Tirey, Andrew Mitchelson, Kaylee (Joe) Daniel, Daniel Fahl, Shauna Fahl, Alexandra Fahl; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers: Jack Coady and Jim Coady.
A funeral mass for Gene will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylorville, with Msgr. David Lantz officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of mass, also in the church. Inurnment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Taylorville. McClure Funeral Home & Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
