Carroll Joe Wright, 75, formerly of Pana, died at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2018 in Newport Beach, Calif.
He was born on November 21, 1942 in Taylorville, the son of Joseph A. and Miriam Cole Wright (both deceased).
Joe attended Pana High School and graduated with the class of 1960. He also attended Eastern Illinois University and graduated in 1970. He began his career in water safety as a life guard at the Kitchell Park swimming pool in Pana. He also attained several Water Safety certifications with the American Red Cross in Milwaukee, Wisc. In 1973, Joe moved to Palm Springs, Calif. where he managed and coached at the Palm Springs Municipal Swimming Pool. He coached a number of swimmers who went on to swim in the Olympics and retired as a teacher in the Palm Springs school system.
He married Marguerite (Jezo) Wright and they later divorced.
Joe is survived by his son Timothy (Missy) Wright, daughter Michele Smith, grandchildren: Muriel Wright, Sawyeer, Tennyson and Jonah Smith, two brothers: Ivan and (Vicki) Wright of Springfield, Terry (Noma) Wright of Taylorville, nephews Jarrett Wright, of Springfield, Brandon Wright of Phoenix, Ariz., and niece Amanda (Dr. Jeff Smith) of Joshua Tree, Calif.
Cremation rites were accorded. A memorial service for family and friends will be held on April 28, 2018, in Palm Springs, Calif.
