Paul Dean Wilhour, born June 21, 1944, went home to the Lord on December 17, 2017 in Surprise, Arizona.
Paul was born in Decatur, Ill. to Harry and Miriam Wilhour of Owaneco, Ill. He was the third child with two older brothers, John and David. Paul grew up on his family’s farm in Owaneco.
He and his family were long time members of Buckeye Methodist Church. Paul attended elementary school in Owaneco and then on to Taylorville for Junior and Senior High School Paul was active with 4H and FFA.
In 1964, Paul moved with his brother John and family to Southern California. Paul worked in the grocery business and attended college at California State University, San Bernardino and graduated with his business degree in 1973. He married Maggie (Margaret Lenz) in 1975, becoming a father to her two daughters, Amy and Sheri. They settled in the Victorville, Apple Valley, California area. In 1975 he began his career with RJ Reynolds, and was promoted several times sending his family to live in Portland, Ore. and Sandy, Utah. In 1993 Paul went to work for National Tobacco Co. and he Maggie lived in Louisville KY for 10 years. In 2003 they decided to settle down in Surprise, Arizona where he worked part-time. Paul finished his career in the tobacco industry and retired from Smokey Mountain Snuff in 2017.
Paul enjoyed many hobbies that included golf, bocce ball, watching NASCAR and the Arizona Diamondbacks. His most favorite hobby was socializing with friends and family. In their spare time Paul and Maggie traveled to many great destinations throughout the US and Europe.
Paul was diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma (lung cancer) in 2016. He fought a valiant fight, never losing his optimism, never wavering in his faith and always ready to get out and golf, have happy hour with friends and take a swim in the pool. After suffering several strokes, it was decided that Paul would stop treatments and enjoy precious time with his family. His brothers and their families, granddaughters, Pastors and friends were able to visit with him. This was a cherished time for Paul and his family. He passed away at home surrounded by his wife, Maggie and daughters, Amy and Sheri.
Paul is survived by his wife of 43 years, Maggie (Lenz), his children, Amy Wright and Sheri Garver (Kevin) of Peoria, Arizona. Three granddaughters, Sidney Kay Hewitson, Riley Marie Hewitson of Kirkland, Wash. and Kenzie Ann Garver of Peoria, Ariz. He leaves behind two brothers, John and David Wilhour and their wives, Shirley and Jackie Wilhour as well as many nephews and nieces.
Paul, Maggie and family are members of the Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Peoria, Ariz. Paul's internment will be held Saturday, May 26, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Buckeye Cemetery located at 1617-1651 East 600 North Road Owaneco, Ill. 62555. There will be an informal luncheon/get together held at the Taylorville VFW Hall at 515 N West Ave, Taylorville, Ill. 62568 following the service.
