A mixed pace of corn and soybean consumption
URBANA, Ill. – With the large U.S. corn and soybean crops this year, the importance of consumption and the size of year-ending stocks for longer-term price direction have been underscored.  According to a University of Illinois agricultural economist, extremely large year-ending stocks would increase the probability of prolonged surpluses and relatively low prices while more modest year-ending stocks would open the door for a quicker recovery in prices.

Money movement overshadows bearish fundamentals
Fund flow has trumped fundamentals over the last week with hedge pressure unable to match the influx of money in the grain markets. Friday’s Commitment of Traders Report, for example, indicated that managed money funds added 38,284 contracts to their already long corn position last week while simultaneously increasing their soybean position by a modest 853 contracts.

Hedge pressure likely to emerge with harvest progress
Grain trade has held steadfast near the top of its recent range this week. Ebola concerns had initially created an exodus of money in the financial markets over the last several weeks, but the ability for the grain markets to maintain their recent strength amidst that exodus and in the face of record large production, suggests that commodities may be perceived as undervalued relative to their financial counterparts.

2014 ethanol consumption exceeds expectations, 2015 prospects uncertain
URBANA, Ill. – Ethanol production, consumption, and stocks data are typically reviewed on a calendar-year basis because Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS) are established for calendar years.  However, according to a University of Illinois agricultural economist, because corn is the major feedstock for domestic ethanol production, ethanol data on a corn marketing year basis (September to August) are important for monitoring and anticipating marketing-year corn consumption.
