Surplus ethanol, export cancellations hurt demand picture
Both the corn and soybean markets have experienced residual selling pressure this week stemming from last week’s USDA report. In fact, Friday afternoon’s CFTC report showed liquidation by both index funds and speculative funds, each liquidating around 20,000 long contracts.  Large speculative funds remain long roughly 150,000 corn contracts.

Grains higher in post-holiday, pre-report trade
Grains have been lightly higher this week after volume has returned to the markets following the holiday lull. Fundamental news has been light, but corn has been 10 higher on the March contract this week and beans are up 49 on the January contract.

URBANA, Ill. – With the large U.S. corn and soybean crops this year, the importance of consumption and the size of year-ending stocks for longer-term price direction have been underscored.  According to a University of Illinois agricultural economist, extremely large year-ending stocks would increase the probability of prolonged surpluses and relatively low prices while more modest year-ending stocks would open the door for a quicker recovery in prices.

Money movement overshadows bearish fundamentals
Fund flow has trumped fundamentals over the last week with hedge pressure unable to match the influx of money in the grain markets. Friday’s Commitment of Traders Report, for example, indicated that managed money funds added 38,284 contracts to their already long corn position last week while simultaneously increasing their soybean position by a modest 853 contracts.
