Tornado softball season ends in 3-0 loss to Effingham

The defense put in the work for the Tornadoes Tuesday, but the offense struggled as they picked up just one hit in their 3-0 loss to Effingham during the regional matchup in Charleston.

With Mahomet-Seymour losing 2-1 Tuesday night in the Sectional to Springfield, the Apollo conference was allowed to make its All-Conference selections public for girls soccer.

Team Curtin leaders in Monday Morning retired men's golf league
After five weeks of play, Team Curtin  is leading the Monday Morning Retired Men’s Golf League with a cumulative score of 816. Team Crist is holding second place with an 827; Team Saxe is in third with 848; Team Johnson is in fourth with 851; Team Spence is in fifth with an 884; Team Hayes is in sixth with 892; Team Frisina is in seventh with 920; and Team Davis is in eighth with a 950.

RANTOUL — The  Tornado boys competed in the sectional track meet held at Rantoul Thursday. “The meet ran slow and it was a very tough sectional with a lot of very talented teams. The kids ran hard, but just fell short from placing,” said head coach Brian Blomquist.

The Tornadoes and the Lincoln Railers finally got to finish their softball double header after being rained out on Tuesday. The Tornadoes were able to shut out Lincoln in game one and win 4-0 with game two turning into a slugfest and the Tornadoes coming out on top 10-2.

Tornado girls finish tenth at Sectional track meet
It started out warm and sunny on Wednesday at three o’clock when the meet started, but by the time the meet ended, it was a little colder and a little wetter. Around six o’clock, the thunder started rumbling and the officials put the meet in a delay because where there is thunder, there is lightening. The rain began pouring around ten after six, and the track was clear with the last rumble coming at twenty after.

It was a Tornado duel on Tuesday as the Tri-City Tornadoes hosted the Taylorville Tornadoes. Taylorville trailed 3-0 after the second inning, but they would score four runs in the sixth inning to come away with the win and give Tri-City its second loss on the season.

One day removed from the varsity Apollo Conference meet, the Tornadoes hosted the Fresh/Soph Apollo conference meet on Saturday. The Tornado boys finished in fifth with 53 points and the Tornado girls were sixth with 31 points.

You usually don’t see that in back-to-back games, but that’s life in the Apollo,” said Taylorville Baseball Coach Brian Sample Saturday after a 15-1 loss to Effingham in game one of a double header and a 14-0 loss in game two. “The first -game pitcher, he’s going to Missouri State; the second-game kid, he’s going to Kentucky, so they’ve got a ton of talent on the mound."

Scott Hill, former Taylorville Tornado, received three high honors last Wednesday for his bowling accomplishments throughout his college career. Hill was named MVP for the 2017-2018 season by the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association, was named an All-American by the same organization, and was also named Collegiate Bowler of the Year from the International Bowling Media Association.

Jaris Wommack, a 2007 THS graduate, was a three year starter for the Tornadoes basketball team and a two years starter at wide receiver on the football team. During the 2006 football season, Wommack led the team in receiving and was selected to the Central State Eight All-Conference Team.

THS sports hall of fame
Linda Prasun, a 1983 THS graduate, was a four year letter winner in basketball and won two letters in track. A starting guard on the Lady Tornadoes inaugural season in 1979, Prasun scored the very first basket in girls’ basketball history against the Mt Zion Lady Braves. She went on to score 119 points in a short 14 game season and followed that with 390 points in 1980-81.

Jones to be inducted into THS Sports Hall of Fame
Johnny Jones graduated from Taylorville High School in 1963.  A two year letter winner and starter for the Tornadoes basketball Team, he was the second leading scorer on Taylorville in both 1962 and 1963. Averaging double figures both seasons, Jones helped lead the Tornadoes to back to back winning seasons at 14-12 and 16-7.

The Taylorville boys and girls track team held their senior night on Thursday as they faced off against SHG, Lincoln, and Rochester in a quad meet. “We like to get it in earlier on in the season, that way the kids aren’t worrying about it as they are also trying to qualify for Sectionals and that. Plus, we like to get it on a day that is nicer,” said Taylorville boys head coach Brian Blomquist.

The Taylorville Tornadoes made up their double header against the Mt. Zion Braves from Saturday on Tuesday night. The Tornadoes had a 5-2 lead going into the final inning of game one, but the Braves battled for nine runs in the seventh to take an 11-2 lead, with the Tornadoes only getting two in their half of the seventh and they would drop game one 11-7. The Braves would carry their momentum into game two as they would win 10-0 in five innings.

The Tornadoes finally got a couple of games in last week as they played a pair on Saturday against Lanphier. The field looked good but the weather did not, as the rain was sprinkling and the wind was blowing throughout both games which helped lift the ball at times and also made it dance in the air. The Tornadoes fell in the first game 10-6, but would bounce back in the second game to win 9-1.

Taylorville girls soccer returns after seven year hiatus
Head coach Jordan Andruch is very familiar with Tornado soccer. Andruch played soccer for the Tornadoes in high school and continued his passion for the game into helping coach younger kids before becoming the TJHS track coach. Andruch accepted the position in May of last year and ran summer and fall camps with the girls to prepare for the season.

DECATUR — The Tornadoes proved on Wednesday that they can compete with the “big-boys” of the Central State Eight conference as they traveled down to Decatur to take on the state-ranked MacArthur Generals. TAYLORVILLE — The Tornadoes will face off against the Decatur MacArthur Generals on Wednesday in the first round of MacArthur’s hosted regional. Two teams with 40 plus wins combined sounds more like a championship game and not the opening round game, but Decatur MacArthur (21-9, 15-4 CS8) finished third in the Central State 8 conference behind co-champions Southeast and Lanphier while the Tornadoes (20-9, 7-5 Apollo) finished in third in the Apollo behind conference champion Lincoln and runner-up Mahomet-Seymour.
