A&M Raiders smother Cardinals with defense

MOWEAQUA — The weather wasn’t the only thing that was frozen on Thursday night in Moweaqua as the Central A&M Raider defense held the visiting Warrensburg-Latham Cardinals to 10 points in the first three quarters, including pitching a shutout until 5:44 left in the first half.

A&M Raiders win Macon County tournament

WARRENSBURG — The Raiders made it to their eighth straight title game in the Macon County tournament on Saturday and faced off against St. Teresa. After finishing second last year, the Raiders were able to bounce back and win the tournament once again for coach Dooley with a 54-23 victory over conferce foe St. Teresa.

“I thought this game was the best game we had played all tournament. It’s definitely a nice way for us to get some momentum as we head back into our regular schedule and have some tough games coming up this week,” said head coach Tom Dooley.

TUSCOLA — The Warriors opened up the game with a back-to-back combo of layups and threes that spanned 4:24 until Brenah Durbin hit a three from the corner to stop the run. That 10 point swing would be too much of an uphill battle for the Raiders to climb, though, as the closest they brought the score was within two, but weren’t ever quite able to tie it up or take the lead. They would drop their first conference game to Tuscola 48-43.

MOWEAQUA — It was a mismatch from the start Friday night as the Central A&M Raiders hosted the Decatur Christian Warriors. “We knew they were a little down, but we just talked to our kids about playing hard, playing against themselves, respecting their opponent and respecting the game, and I think we did a good job of that tonight,” said Raider head coach Rob Smith after his team’s 72-18 win.

ST. TERESA — Central A&M overcame a two point deficit to get the victory in their opening conference contest Thursday night against the St. Teresa Bulldogs. The Raiders trailed by three heading into the final frame and outscored the Bulldogs 14-9 to get the 42-40 victory.
