THS soccer now has winningest season in THS history
TAYLORVILLE — The Taylorville Tornadoes picked up their third win of the season as they defeated Metro East Lutheran on Friday night. This year’s Tornadoes team moves to 3-9-2 on the season, which makes this year the winningest year in Taylorville history; the previous best was 2-15 in the 2005-2006 season.

Jaris Wommack, a 2007 THS graduate, was a three year starter for the Tornadoes basketball team and a two years starter at wide receiver on the football team. During the 2006 football season, Wommack led the team in receiving and was selected to the Central State Eight All-Conference Team.

THS sports hall of fame
Linda Prasun, a 1983 THS graduate, was a four year letter winner in basketball and won two letters in track. A starting guard on the Lady Tornadoes inaugural season in 1979, Prasun scored the very first basket in girls’ basketball history against the Mt Zion Lady Braves. She went on to score 119 points in a short 14 game season and followed that with 390 points in 1980-81.

Jandi Services finished atop the men’s fraternal league with 38 points while Y-Zoe’s finished second with 37 points, T-Ville KC II was third with 35.5 points, Yard Heating and Cooling was fourth with 35, Andy’s Market finished fifth with 34.5, T’Ville KC was sixth with 34, Team 12 finished seventh with 31, Olde bowl finished eighth with 30, Wendy’s was ninth with 28 points, CTI Fiber was 10 with 27 points, Solid 9 Pro Shop finished 11 with 26.5, and Taylorville Moose was 12 with 24.5 points.

Jones to be inducted into THS Sports Hall of Fame
Johnny Jones graduated from Taylorville High School in 1963.  A two year letter winner and starter for the Tornadoes basketball Team, he was the second leading scorer on Taylorville in both 1962 and 1963. Averaging double figures both seasons, Jones helped lead the Tornadoes to back to back winning seasons at 14-12 and 16-7.

It was a five-run first inning and a seven-run third inning that spelled the end for the Tornadoes on Thursday as the Warrensburg-Latham Cardinals topped the Tornadoes 16-2. The two Tornado runs came in the fifth inning and the Tornadoes stranded the bases loaded to end the game.

The Taylorville boys and girls track team held their senior night on Thursday as they faced off against SHG, Lincoln, and Rochester in a quad meet. “We like to get it in earlier on in the season, that way the kids aren’t worrying about it as they are also trying to qualify for Sectionals and that. Plus, we like to get it on a day that is nicer,” said Taylorville boys head coach Brian Blomquist.

We had a lot of first-pitch outs today, but their guy did a good job of changing speeds,” Taylorville Baseball Coach Brian Sample said Wednesday after his squad dropped a road game, 4-2, to Nokomis.

The Taylorville Tornadoes made up their double header against the Mt. Zion Braves from Saturday on Tuesday night. The Tornadoes had a 5-2 lead going into the final inning of game one, but the Braves battled for nine runs in the seventh to take an 11-2 lead, with the Tornadoes only getting two in their half of the seventh and they would drop game one 11-7. The Braves would carry their momentum into game two as they would win 10-0 in five innings.

Tornadoes split Saturday series with Lanphier
The Tornadoes finally got a couple of games in last week as they played a pair on Saturday against Lanphier. The field looked good but the weather did not, as the rain was sprinkling and the wind was blowing throughout both games which helped lift the ball at times and also made it dance in the air. The Tornadoes fell in the first game 10-6, but would bounce back in the second game to win 9-1.

Head coach Jordan Andruch is very familiar with Tornado soccer. Andruch played soccer for the Tornadoes in high school and continued his passion for the game into helping coach younger kids before becoming the TJHS track coach. Andruch accepted the position in May of last year and ran summer and fall camps with the girls to prepare for the season.

DECATUR — The Tornadoes proved on Wednesday that they can compete with the “big-boys” of the Central State Eight conference as they traveled down to Decatur to take on the state-ranked MacArthur Generals. TAYLORVILLE — The Tornadoes will face off against the Decatur MacArthur Generals on Wednesday in the first round of MacArthur’s hosted regional. Two teams with 40 plus wins combined sounds more like a championship game and not the opening round game, but Decatur MacArthur (21-9, 15-4 CS8) finished third in the Central State 8 conference behind co-champions Southeast and Lanphier while the Tornadoes (20-9, 7-5 Apollo) finished in third in the Apollo behind conference champion Lincoln and runner-up Mahomet-Seymour.

SPRINGFIELD — The Tornadoes weren’t quite able to get the proverbial lid to come off of the basket in the first quarter of Tuesday night’s mathcup with Sacred-Heart Griffin. Some early momentum could have really changed the final outcome, but it wasn’t so as the Cyclones were able to defeat the Tornadoes 48-26 to end a successful season for the Lady Tornadoes in regional play.

SPRINGFIELD — The Tornadoes were in “familiar” territory on Monday night as they traveled to Lanphier and the Lober-Nika gymnasium to face off against Southeast in the first game of the Lanphier Regional on Monday. Lady Tornadoes rally to spoil Mattoon's senior night
MATTOON — The Tornado girls were trailing by 13 heading into the fourth quarter of their contest against Mattoon. Keller’s never-say-quit attitude that he’s instilled in the girls was on display as they came back to lead 52-51. Despite relinquishing the lead again with just 1:06 remaining in the game, the Tornadoes continued to fight and ultimately came away with a 61-56 victory on Mattoon’s senior night.

8th grade Tornadoes celebrate successful season
TAYLORVILLE — Last Wednesday the eighth grade Tornadoes basketball season came to a close after they fell 40-37 to second-seeded Stephen Decatur in the regional championship. The Tornadoes got to the title game by defeating fifth-seeded Mt. Zion by 14 and used that momentum to defeat the top-seeded Jefferson squad. “We led almost the entire game (against Jefferson), until the last minute. It was a great game,” said head coach Tom May.
