Taste Food - Chocolate: A Swiss Remedy
After I finished cooking school in Paris, I lived in Switzerland for a number of years. During this time, I acquired another important form of education, which is the Swiss view of chocolate as sustenance. In Switzerland, chocolate is considered a staple and a panacea for all that is fraught in the world.

Smart Money: Insurance company is obligated to explain its policy
DEAR BRUCE: I've recently begun taking over my mom's finances. She is 70, in poor health, currently in a nursing home and doesn't drive.

Smart Money: Carpet contract is in dispute
DEAR BRUCE: My husband and I decided to put new carpeting in our living and dining rooms. The gentleman discussed fees, we signed the contract and I gave him $1,000 cash down. After he left, I went over the contract further and found that there was a discrepancy in the total amount still owed to the company.

Taste Food: A Spirited Autumn Cocktail
Finally, the weather has turned cooler. I have to admit that, as a New England native, I miss the distinct change of seasons in California -- especially in the fall. In my opinion, at this time of year, we're supposed to be pulling on our fleece and socks, not slipping into sandals and T-shirts. So, while it may still be a tad too early for wool in California, I can at least make this cocktail -- fragrant with apple and cinnamon and boosted with tequila and Cointreau -- and close my eyes and pretend that it's a crisp and blustery autumn day.

Smart Money: Wage differences seem unfair
DEAR BRUCE: I work for a company that has a fourth shift, which pays employees $6 an hour more on Saturday and Sunday. But when we have mandatory overtime, we have to work Saturday and receive time and a half.

How bulk cooking can make meals easier
Healthy family meals can get lost in the shuffle of busy schedules. Convenience may win out when parents are short on time, and it's hard not to be enticed by the ease of fast food or the lure of frozen foods. While these options are certainly fine on occasion, there is a more nutritious solution for time-crunched families.

Taste Food: Move Over, Chickpea Hummus
Who doesn't like a good hummus? Mild, nutty and agreeably versatile, this creamy Levantine dip is a go-to for snacks, spreads and party dips. It's also a wonderful starting point for variations, such as carrot hummus.

Smart Money: Investment in financial education will reap rewards
DEAR BRUCE: I recently got married to a wonderful man and we are working together to combine our finances and plan for our future. In the past, he has been reluctant to invest in his company's 401(k) and instead has earmarked $60,000 in a savings account for retirement. I have convinced him, and he has agreed to start maxing out his 401(k) instead of earmarking money in his savings account.

Taste Food: One-dish Vietnamese-style dinner
There is something infinitely satisfying about presenting a complete dinner heaped on one platter. The arrangement suggests a family-style feast. It's a fun method for casual dining, which allows everyone to dig into a balanced meal combining meat, greens and grains, or in this case, noodles.

Taste Food: Flavorful Summer Soup
The end of summer delivers bushels of sweet peppers, corn and tomatoes to my kitchen. At the same time, the whisper of fall in the air brings a craving for warm soups layered with flavor and fragrant with smoke and char. This soup has a little bit of all that. I roast garden peppers and tomatoes in the oven, which slowly coaxes out their flavor and natural sweetness, then blitz them with aromatics. The roasted veggies create the stock for a healthy and comforting soup.

Taste Food: QUICK PICKLING
When summer yields more vegetables than you can shake a stick at, it's time to quick pickle. Quick pickling is one of the easiest ways to preserve a bounty of vegetables and a simple method to keep your veggies on hand for munching.
