BECKLEY, WV — Seven scouts and one leader from Troop 74 returned last week from the 2013 National Scout Jamboree at Summit Bechtel Reserve near Beckley, West Virginia. The local group was part of the Abraham Lincoln Council contingent of thirty six boys and four leaders who participated in the event, along with 50,000 other Scouts and Scouters from across the country.
During the 10 day event, the boys participated in activities such as BMX and mountain biking, zip lines, archery, firearms shooting, challenge courses and whitewater rafting. Other highlights included hearing from speaker Mike Rowe, Eagle Scout and host of TV's "Dirty Jobs", who told the boys that while the Scout Law says Scouts should be clean, he knows they aren't afraid to get dirty to finish a task. He also encouraged them to work with their hands, as well as their brains, after high school.
The rock band 3 Doors Down performed for the Scouts, and a 30 minute fireworks show followed.
Everyone was glad to board the bus home, but a little sad to see the event end. The boys and leaders decided that they wouldn't miss the cold showers they had been taking during the Jamboree, however.
