CHICAGO (AP) — A regional energy giant denies that particulate emissions at one of its central Illinois coal plants near Peoria frequently exceed legal limits.
Environmentalists made the allegation in a lawsuit filed Thursday in Peoria federal court. It names the owner of the Edwards power plant — Ameren Energy Resources Company LLC.
Ann Alexander is an attorney for one of the plaintiffs, the Natural Resources Defense Council. She says Ameren has also “dragged” its “feet” in making upgrades at the decades-old plant.
But a spokesman for the parent company, St. Louis-based Ameren Corp., said in a statement the plant always operates according to regulations. Brian Bretsch adds equipment removes 99 percent of particulates.
He also alleged such a filing, in his words, “is a common tactic used by opponents” of coal-fired plants.
