CHICAGO (AP) — A published report says the sister of a key City Council member has been hired by Chicago Public Schools to help with the controversial proposed school closures.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports (http://bit.ly/123O26i ) Catherine Sugrue was named to the newly created position of director of school transition. She’s the sister of Alderman Pat O’Connor, who is Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s floor leader.
The district plans to close 54 schools. The process has been highly charged with intense community meetings and protests. Emanuel has been at the center of the criticism.
O’Connor says his sister is a contract employee without benefits and she’s qualified for the job. She worked at CPS for 17 years before she became an education consultant.
School officials say the family connection had nothing to do with hiring.
