CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — A group of past Chief Illiniweks at the University of Illinois is pitching a plan to bring back the mascot. But the university chancellor says she won’t back the idea.
The Council of Chiefs has asked the university to let the mascot return to two campus events a year. Steve Raquel is president of the group. He said that the Peoria tribe in Oklahoma is willing to discuss the idea. Tribe members are the descendants of American Indians who once lived in Illinois.
The university stopped using the mascot in 2007 under pressure from the NCAA. Some American Indians consider the mascot offensive.
But some schools use American Indian mascots with the OK of relevant tribes.
Chancellor Phyllis Wise, however, opposes the plan.
