BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis says Congress should not back military involvement in Syria to retaliate for the alleged use of chemical weapons.
The Taylorville Republican says President Barack Obama lacks a clear objective for Syria after addressing the nation Tuesday.
Obama — a Democrat — says America should try diplomacy first before military strikes against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad (buh-SHAHR’ AHS’-ahd). The regime reportedly used chemical weapons against its people last month in the country’s civil war.
Davis said that Obama is trying to use diplomacy after “beating the drums of war.” Obama is open to an offer from the Soviet Union to persuade Syria to turn over its chemical weapons.
The GOP freshman says Obama hasn’t outlined a plan that would disarm Assad.
