Several central Ill. farmers help with harvest after farmer's death

LEXINGTON, Ill. (AP) — Dozens of central Illinois farmers worked together to harvest more than 300 acres of corn that belonged to a man who died from a heart attack this summer.

Sixteen combines rolled through cornfields near Livingston that were planted by Dave Thomas, who died in July.

After his death, his family decided to end operations on the family’s farm, selling its equipment.

“Dave Thomas just helped everybody if he knew there was a need,” said Livingston farmer Roland Frerichs, who was among those who showed up to help. “This is payback. This is what farmers do.”

A grain elevator that’s usually closed on Sundays opened for the occasion as volunteers loaded grain harvested from four cornfields into trucks bound for the Prairie Central Co-op in Lexington.

Meanwhile, Chenoa pilot Bill Thacker flew Thomas’ family over the property to get an aerial view of the final harvest.

Thomas’ son, Jeff Thomas, says the farm machinery will be auctioned later this year. The land is rented.

Meanwhile, Chenoa farmers are planning a similar harvest Monday for Dave Harrison, who died last week.
