11/4/2013 12:47:00 PM Halloween quiet at SIUC even after bar ban ends
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Carbondale officials say an experiment to allow downtown bars to open during the Halloween weekend appears to have been a success.
There were no problems with unusual mayhem or violence during the holiday weekend.
The bars have had to shut down for the past 12 years because of rioting and vandalism in the college town in far-southern Illinois. Carbondale’s city council voted this summer to lift the ban as part a one-year trial run.
Mayor Joel Fritzler says the weekend “went well.” While police were on hand, Fritzler says so far it appears the holiday weekend was “no different than any other weekend.” Although he says that may be because of the rainy weather.
Some downtown business owners say they hope the change will become permanent.
