12/13/2013 1:20:00 PM Illinois inmate dies after plunging 5 stories
JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Department of Corrections says an inmate serving a 70-year sentence on a murder conviction plunged five stories to his death after a visit at the maximum-security lockup by his girlfriend.
Corrections officials say inmate Angel Garcia was pronounced dead at a hospital three hours after the fall inside Stateville Correctional Center near Joliet.
The 33-year-old was convicted of murder in Cook County and officials say he wasn’t eligible for parole until 2079, when he would have been 99.
A statement from the corrections department says Garcia had not been on suicide watch and he wasn’t a mental health patient.
Officials say Garcia was returning to the cell house after a visit from his girlfriend when he suddenly ran to a fifth-floor spot and jumped.
