SPRINGFIELD - A Taylorville doctor and wife will be sentenced on wire fraud charges September 4th after a U.S. federal judge delivered a guilty verdict yesterday in the couple’s bench trial.
Dr. Vernon Klinefelter, 62, and his wife Geraldine Klinefelter, a nurse practitioner, were found guilty by a federal judge of defrauding the government out of more than $100,000 in Social Security disability benefits over the course of a two year period. Specifically, that Vernon lied about his work status on a disability claim application and continued to work as a physician while receiving benefits.
U.S. District Judge Richard Mills stated he will issue a written description of his findings in about 10 days, according to the State Journal-Register.
The Klinefelters are facing up to 30 years in prison and a million dollar fine in the wake of their conviction. They are presently out on bond ahead of their sentencing hearing on September 4th.
