1/28/2017 10:06:00 AM Area orchestra to present special concert Feb. 11
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Sangamon Valley Civic Orchestra will host War and Peace. The performance, under the direction of Conductor Matthew Sheppard, takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2017, at Hoogland Center for the Arts’ Theatre 3.
Join Sangamon Valley Civic Orchestra as they explore the stark contrast of war and peace. Their concert opens with “Mars, Bringer of War” from Gustav Holst’s infamous suite, The Planets. J.S. Bach’s “Sheep May Safely Graze” follows with a strong feeling of happiness and harmony. Following Bach’s piece, the audience will hear Georges Bizet’s “L’Arlésienne Suites No. 1 and No. 2,” originally written as incidental music for the play L’Arlésienne.
The play is a tragic love story and Bizet’s works do a tremendous job depicting the white-hot emotions fueling the story, as well as the beautiful landscape that is Provence, France.
Admission to the concert is $10 for adults, $5 for students, and free to children aged 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting www.hcfta.org or by calling 217-523-2787.
