SPRINGFIELD — This weekend, HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital will host a reunion for families whose children were patients in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) from 2009-2014. Patients, siblings, parents and grandparents have been invited to celebrate the progress that these children have made in their lives since leaving the NICU three to eight years ago. The event will be from 1-5 p.m. at Erin’s Pavilion today.
“We look forward to seeing so many past patients and their families come back for this NICU reunion,” said Vernessa Glover, executive director of St. John’s Children’s Hospital and women’s services. “Many of our doctors and nurses helped these families during their most difficult time, so to have an event to celebrate the strides these children have made is really exciting.”
St. John’s cares for nearly 2,000 babies each year, 600 who are premature or seriously ill and spend time in the NICU. The 40-bed, level III NICU serves patients throughout southern and central Illinois.
