TAYLORVILLE — Direction matters. An error of even one degree in heading means that for every sixty miles we travel, we miss our intended destination by one mile. In a world of GPS signals and Google maps, that doesn’t seem like a big deal, but if we travel 300 miles just one degree off the correct heading, we find ourselves five miles away from the place we intended to go. And that means we will need some help finding our destination.

Newman has been writing songs and music since the early 1960’s and is best known for his scores and songs in films and television of which he has won a number of awards. One song he won several awards for was featured in the 1996 animated film “Toy Story”. The song is, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”.

Buschon named Woman of Distinction
TAYLORVILLE — Linda Buschon of St. Mary Catholic Church in Taylorville has been honored as a “Woman of Distinction” by the Springfield Diocesan Council of Catholic Women. The Council met Saturday, June 17, 2017 in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Springfield to present the sixth annual “Women of Distinction” awards. A Mass with Bishop Thomas presented celebrants with a certificate. Buschon was honored for her work as a volunteer. She actively lives her Catholic faith, displays her spirituality and shares her time and talents with a cheerful attitude by doing acts of service and leadership, both to the church and in the community.

Stonington Methodist celebrates heritage in 2017
STONINGTON — The congregation of the Stonington United Methodist Church is acknowledging their heritage by celebrating their 150th anniversary during 2017. The First Methodist Episcopal Church of Stonington, Illinois, now known as The Stonington United Methodist Church, is the direct outgrowth of a class organized in 1867 by the Rev. W. H. Ferguson, a local preacher. Meetings were held at the Washington School House. In 1873 a church was built in Stonington at a cost of $2,000 on a lot that was given by Captain R. W. Covington and is currently the location of the Masonic Temple.

ELWIN, Ill. — Ladies from Taylorville Evangelical Free Church's SALT group recently participated in an outing at The Raspberry Tea Room and Antique Mall in Elwin.  They enjoyed a lovely luncheon and browsing the selection of antiques.   Twenty-four ladies were able to attend.  The ladies' group, called "SALT", stands for Sisters Abiding in Light and Truth.

Old-school journalism values led Strobel to God

Reporter Lee Strobel was investigating the story of his life, and he knew it.

As legal-affairs editor at The Chicago Tribune, he had covered plenty of hot-button issues -- like abortion rights -- that required him to wrestle with the views of people on the "other side." Strobel knew what he believed, as an atheist committed to abortion rights and other liberal causes. But he knew, as a journalist, that he had a job to do.

PANA, Ill.—First Baptist Christian Academy, a 7th-12th grade Christian day school located in Rosamond, on May 17 announced Caleb Wheeler as the new principal. For the last three years, Caleb has distinguished himself as the operations manager of the WJLY and WTRH radio stations. Recently, the Academy has taken the unique step of only offering classes at the upper grades, and he joins the Academy in this time of transition as the school seeks to be one of excellence in the tri-county area at the junior high and senior high levels.

Mother-Daughter Banquet At Faith Community
TAYLORVILLE — "Poured Out and Planted" was the theme of the Mother and Daughter Banquet for Faith Community Worship Center which was held in the banquet room of a local restaurant. The tables were decorated in brightly enameled miniature watering cans and enameled flower pots filled with bedding plants. Jami Hefner and Tiffany McArdle led in an opening mixer and funtime activities. Amber Thorpe spoke on the theme, "Poured Out and Planted". Everyone enjoyed a variety of Italian food favorites.
