Dr. James Edwin Riley, 60, of Decatur, died Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at 10:32 a.m. in his home.
He was born on June 27, 1952 in Taylorville, a son of Thomas Raphael and Josephine Marcella (Loreth) Riley. James graduated from Taylorville High School in 1970 as Class Valedictorian. He went on to Northwestern University and graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine in 1974 and earned his Doctor of Medicine in 1975. His academic honors consisted of being a member of Alpha Omega Alpha at Northwestern University Medical School, an Item Writer for the American Board of Family Practice from 1989 to the present, a Medical Examiners Diplomate in 1977, a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice, Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, was a PALS & ACLS Instructor and was also ATLS certified. He completed his Family Practice residency at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield in 1979 and engaged in private practice with the Abraham Lincoln Medical Group from 1979 - 1988. After that, he was a Physician at McKinley Health Center at the University of Illinois from 1988 - 1992 and presently as Emergency Room Physician at Decatur Memorial Hospital since 1991. He was a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, Illinois State Medical Society & St. John’s Lutheran Church in Decatur. In his leisure time he enjoyed reading, swimming, biking & listening to all varieties of music. He married Mary Jo Lehnert on May 31, 1980 in Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield. She survives.
He is also survived by: One son, Philip Riley; and one daughter, Margaret Riley, both of Decatur; two brothers, Gerald Riley of Dekalb, and Patrick (Nancy) Riley of Charlottesville, VA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Thomas Robert Riley, and John Joseph Riley.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield, IL. Vicar Brett Hinrichs of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Decatur will officiate. Burial will be in Elm Lawn Cemetery in Litchfield. Visitation will be held Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until time of service in the church.
