Robert (Bob) Lee Pounds was born July 26, 1926 in Taylorville, Illinois and died October 1, 2013 in Kingwood, Texas.
He began working early in life as a paper carrier for the Taylorville Breeze Courier. Bob joined the Boy Scouts of America and earned the status of Star Scout. He participated in DeMolay and became a member of the Masonic Lodge of Taylorville. He enlisted in the United States Navy on July 29, 1943 and received an honorable discharge with a medal for good conduct on August 2, 1947. He completed a degree in Mining Engineering at the University of Illinois in 1952. His academic excellence earned him the status of Class Valedictorian. After graduating college, Bob was hired by Humble Oil Company, which later became part of Exxon Corporation. In 1956 he received his first foreign assignment and moved his family to Sumatra, Indonesia. He loved traveling the world and also had the opportunity to work for Exxon in New Zealand and Malaysia. In 1973 Bob and his family returned to Houston and he made Kingwood his home until his death. Throughout his life he enjoyed traveling with his family and playing golf. After 10 years of increasing health problems he passed away from respiratory complications and other health conditions.
Bob is survived by Carol, his loving wife of 65 years, five children, nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Cowell, his brother, Charles Shehan, his grandson, Austin Pounds and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Bob requested to cremated and a services to honor his life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday October 19, 2013 at Rosewood Funeral Home, 2602 S. Houston Ave., Humble, TX.
