SPRINGFIELD – A showcase of paintings by local artist Denise Blakeman will open in the James S. Murray Gallery at Lincoln Land Community College Nov. 21. “Portraits of a Different Nature” will be on display through Dec. 8 in the gallery, located on the upper floor of Menard Hall.
Ms. Blakeman’s lyrical paintings are born from her immediate surroundings, then twisted and formed around personal stories, feelings on the human condition and a need to see the lighter side. Blakeman admits an affinity for “kitsch” that she allows into her paintings to provide comic relief on more serious subjects. Her paintings have a tinge of the surrealistic with a bright, appealing palette.
The artist began painting in high school but took a 30-year break before pursuing her passion. She now holds a B.A. in visual arts from the University of Illinois-Springfield and has begun exhibiting her work in Springfield and Decatur. She works as a full-time artist in her Taylorville studio.
