Herbert Steinkamp, Jr., 75, passed away Tuesday morning at Alexian Bros. Hospice Residence in Elk Grove Village, Ill.
Born in Okawville on April 10, 1942 to Herbert and Edna Steinkamp (deceased).
Herb suffered a stroke in June of 2017 and moved to a nursing home to be closer to his sons and grandchildren
He is survived by his son, Randy Steinkamp (wife Tamara), Lake in the Hills, Ill., Herb’s granddaughters: Lauren Steinkamp, Haley Steinkamp, son, Matt Steinkamp (wife Tammy) of Cary, Ill. Herb’s grandchildren: Bailey Steinkamp, Trey Steinkamp, grandson, Tyler Steinkamp of Lincolnwood, Ill., son of Herb’s deceased son, Scott Steinkamp (partner, Tim Barnett), sister, Rosemary Koenigstein (husband, Norman), New Athens, Ill., sister, Betty White, (husband, Mark) Rochester, Ill., sister-in-law, Cindy Steinkamp of Okawville, Ill., wife of deceased brother, Louis Steinkamp of Okawville, Ill., seven nieces and nephews, 10 great-nieces and nephews, six great-great nieces and nephews.
Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Schwengels Steinkamp in 2008, his son, Scott Steinkamp in 2008, parents, Herbert and Edna Steinkamp of Venedy, Ill., his brother, Louis Steinkamp of Okawville, Ill.
Herb loved his grandchildren more than anything and was an avid sports lover. A former Okawville High School All-Star basketball player, class of 1960, he earned a scholarship to play for Rice University in Houston, Texas. A 6’0” guard and tremendous ball handler, he broke the record for total points scored by a guard in a season. He played for the St. Louis Hawks in the NBA for a short time. He and his wife Marilyn raised their three sons: Scott, Randy and Matt in Stonington, Ill. where Herb worked for Stonington Fertilizer and Christian County FS. Herb suffered a stroke in 2017 and moved to a nursing home in the Northwest suburb of Chicago, Crystal Lake, Ill., to be near his two sons and grandchildren. He passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 30, 2018.
There will be a private graveside service for immediate family.
