Lyle Lee Adams was called home to be with the Lord on September 19, 2018 in his home, surrounded by his family. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Lyle on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church in Taylorville, Ill. with Pastor Don Beetem officiating. Visitation for Lyle will be conducted one hour before the service.
Lyle’s life was full and well-lived. He was born on May 17, 1936 in Taylorville, IL to Earl and Nellie "Doad" (Mahan) Adams. Lyle graduated from Taylorville High School in 1954. He married the love of his life, Judy Lindsey, 64 years ago and she remained the jewel of his eye to this day. Together they were blessed with five children; Scott, Mark, Lindsey, Lori and Brad.
Lyle started his work career in 1958 in the US Air Force serving both overseas in England and also at the Pentagon where he was responsible for maintaining one of the military’s first computers. In 1963 with his young family of six in tow, he went to college where he graduated from SIU Carbondale with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology. He began his civilian career working in several management positions with the Illinois Department of Conservation. In 1975 he was appointed by Governor Dan Walker as the first Executive Director of the Illinois Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation Council.
Flying and farming were always part of Lyle’s soul. He was a wildlife biologist/bush pilot for the US Fish and Wildlife Service in Alaska and also served as a commercial pilot for Britt Airways. In his retirement he volunteered as a missionary pilot with the “Wings of Hope” organization where he flew ill and injured individuals out of remote locations in Central America. He loved giving his time to others on their farms, especially driving combines. Lyle also enjoyed fishing and hunting and passed these skills on to his children and grandchildren.
Lyle was proceeded in death by his parents, his sons' Mark and Scott Adams and by his brother Lynn Adams. He is survived by his wife Judy, two daughters: Lindsey (John) Schaefer and Lori (Brad) Sassatelli, son Brad Adams and seven grandchildren: Heather (Luke) Richards, Katie (Mike) Anderson, Jake (Lindsey) Schaefer, Matt (Monica) Adams, Adam Sassatelli, Sam Sassatelli and Joe Sassatelli. Lyle had nine great-grandchildren: Hagan, Hannah, John, Juliette, Rosie, Alice, Jack, Luke and Jane. He is also survived by his brother Dick (Cindy) Adams, sister-in-law Shirley Adams, sister-in-law Jane Kutch and brother-in-law Jim (Kathy) Lindsey.
