Mary E. Henderson, 96, of Pana, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, October 8, 2018 at Heritage Health in Pana. She was born on January 1, 1922 in Lakewood, Ill. to the late Henry and Bertha (Carder) Horsman. She married Wilbur Henderson on April 14, 1946. He died in March of 1987.
Mary graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1940. Prior to marriage, she worked as a telephone operator in the Lakewood phone office and worked at the Sta-Rite Hairpin Factory in Shelbyville. In the late 1970’s, she was a cook for Tower Hill Schools. Mary and Wilbur lived on Wilbur’s home farm in rural Tower Hill, and after his death, she moved to Pana. She kept busy with farm life working alongside Wilbur, which included driving the tractor, taking truckloads of grain to the elevator, caring for their farm animals, delivering home cooked meals to the fields, gardening and canning; this also included Mary being Wilbur’s number one gopher! In the first years of their marriage she cared daily for her invalid mother. Mary and Wilbur and their girls were active members of the Zion United Methodist Church of rural Tower Hill. Some of her church roles were Sunday School and VBS teacher, member of the Ladies Mission Group, and church treasurer. Mary was known for her cooking and loved to prepare special meals for family and friends. She cherished deeply her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. Everyone who knew her saw and felt her love and compassion. She was a devoted Godly mother and grandmother. She loved her family and was a great example to them and all who knew her.
She is survived by three daughters: Connie (Phillip) Glick, Donna (Charlie) Wagner of Pana, and Brenda (John) Jackson of Tower Hill; five grandchildren: Bill (Emma “EJ”) Glick of Champaign, Traci (Chadd) Kobielush of Carmel, Ind., Troy (Melody) Wagner of Taylorville, Kristin (David) Jarrett of Salem, Ill., and Courtney (Brent) Warner of St. Augustine, Fla.; 12 great-grandchildren: Ronald (RC) Schaer; Robert Glick; Ella Kobielush; Madison, Tate and McKenna Wagner; Jackson, Kinsey and Kayleigh Jarrett; and Claire, Blake and Ben Warner and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; granddaughter Rebecca Glick; parents; brothers: Haldon Horsman and infant Noble Guy Horsman; sister, Irma Jane Koons and her husband Lloyd; in-laws: Ray and Mary Henderson; and sisters-in-law: Lucille Foor, Clara Dilley and Lois Dilley.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 11, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at McCracken-Dean Funeral in Pana with Rev. Phillip Glick officiating. Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery, Pana. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. www.mdfh.com
