Gerald “Jerry” L. Sams, 79, of Springfield, passed away at 8:09 p.m. on Monday, January 7, 2019, at his home.
Jerry was born on March 15, 1939, in Taylorville, the son of William and Lucille Toohey Sams. He married Barbara Shaughnessy on February 2, 1963, in Springfield.
Jerry was employed for 30 years as a custodian at Riverton High School. He also coached basketball and baseball at St. Joseph School. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish for 55 years and the Knights of Columbus in Taylorville. Jerry enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, spending time with his grandchildren and playing boardgames with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Gerald Sams, Jr.; brothers, James and Robert Sams; and aunt, Marcella Toohey.
He is survived by his wife, Barb Sams of Springfield; son, Mark (wife, Kristin) Sams of Fairfield, OH; daughters, Brenda (husband, Bill) Williams of Highland Ranch, CO and Barbara Drake of Gilbert, AZ; seven grandchildren, Zachary, Ashley (Patrick) Swanson, Morgan, Haley, Mia, Colin, and Ryan; great-grandchildren, Sofia and Catherine; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1345 N. 6th St., Springfield.
Funeral Mass: 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Daniel G. Shaughnessy, celebrant.
A private family burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery.
