Robert “Rob” Amling, 68, of Tower Hill passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 in his home.
He was born June 6, 1950 in Pana, son of the late Martin and Jean (Alde) Amling. Rob married Debbie DeRochi on October 27, 1979 in the First Presbyterian Church in Taylorville and she survives in Tower Hill.
Rob had lived his entire life in the Pana area. He was a graduate of Pana High School, class of 1968 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from the University of Illinois in 1972. Rob was a commercial horticulturist. He had been the owner and operator of Cold Springs Greenhouse in rural Tower Hill since 1973 and opened Junction Garden Center in Pana in 1986, running both businesses with his wife, Debbie.
Rob was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Pana, where he is President and an Elder. In the past, Rob had served on the Tower Hill Fire Protection District Board of Trustees, Cold Spring Township Supervisor, Pana Community Hospital Board of Directors, Pana Community Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, President of the Pana Area Chamber of Commerce, Christian County Economic Development Board, University of Illinois Dudley Smith Farm Advisory Board, and was involved in the formation of the Tri County Quail Unlimited. Most recently, he was serving on the Shelby County Board, Shelby County Housing Authority Board, chairman of the Heartland Resource Conservation and Development Council, Shelby County Republican Central Committee, Shelby County Economic Development Board, and Kaskaskia Watershed Association.
In addition to his wife, Rob is survived by their daughter, Stacie (Glenn) Sherman, Taylorville, Ill.; grandson, Aiden Sherman; siblings: Christine (Lynn) Bishop, Rosamond, Ill.; Jennifer Young, Crawfordville, Fla. and Carol (Dwight) Vasel, Ft. Worth, Texas; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Rob will be held on Friday, June 7, 2019 in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Pana at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Terrence E. O’Brien officiating. Burial will be in Rosemond Grove Cemetery, Rosamond. Visitation will be Thursday, June 6, 2019 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home. www.mdfh.com
