Joseph R. O’Bryan, 89, of Taylorville passed away at 6:50 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2020 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.

He was born on July 30, 1930 in Taylorville, the son of David and Anna (Allen) O’Bryan. He married Marilyn Ruth Spresser on February 11, 1956 in Beardstown.

Mr. O’Bryan was a Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and retired from Peabody Mine #10 where he worked for many years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Knight of Columbus. Joe enjoyed his time outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He spent many days fishing for Salmon in the waters of Michigan where he and Marilyn enjoyed camping. He enjoyed tending to his garden and growing roses. Joe was known all across town for the large tree in the front of their home that he decorated every year with countless, colorful homemade Christmas ornaments. More than anything he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife: Marilyn of Taylorville; children: John O’Bryan (Stephanie), Mark O’Bryan (Wendy), and Loretta O’Bryan, all of Taylorville; grandchildren: Kelly Schmitz (Paul) of St. Louis, Trevor O’Bryan of Taylorville, and Chelsey O’Bryan of Springfield; great-grandchildren: Kyle, Rafe, Dane, and Reid Schmitz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings.

A funeral service for Joseph will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at McClure Funeral Home in Taylorville with Monsignor David Lantz officiating. Visitation will be from noon until the time of the service at 1:00p.m. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville.
