Dr. Verlin G. Bundy, 90, passed away on August 6, 2020 in Springfield, Ill.
He was born on December 17, 1929 in Odin, Illinois, the son of Paul F. and Della M. (Deadmond) Bundy. He married Catherine E. Auberry on October 8, 1950.
He is survived by children: Debra (Robert) Bommarito of Springfield and Mark (Julie) Bundy of Ankeny, Iowa, grandsons: Joseph Bommarito of Tallahassee Fla., Paul Bundy (Maggie) of Urbandale, Iowa, and Eric Bundy of London, England. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Reta Bundy of Salem, Ill. and Shirley Bundy of Georgia, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine, who passed away on June 3, his parents, sisters Louis Tate, Avadel Cooksey, infant sister Glenda, and brothers Delbert, Warren, and Lowell.
He served in the army during the Korean War, taking basic training with the 101st Airborne and then serving with the Central Identification Unit of the American Graves Registration Service Group in Kokura, Japan. He received his B.S. and M.S. degree from Southern Illinois University and a Doctorate of Education from Illinois State University. He was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi, an honorary international academic organization. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mound Lodge #122, Eastern Star, Consistory, Ansar Shrine, Christian County Shrine Club, American Legion, VFW life member, and several educational organizations.
During his career he taught at the high school level for four years, served as junior high principal four years, and was superintendent of the Taylorville School District the last twenty seven years of his career. After retirement, he and his wife retired to Surprise, Ariz., where they lived for twenty-three years, enjoying golf and great friends.
As per his wishes, cremation will be accorded and private family interment graveside services for both he and his wife will be conducted at the Camp Butler National Cemetery. His memorial page may be visited at Staab Funeral Home in Springfield, Ill.
