Charlene Slater, 79, of Pana passed away Friday, December 4, 2020 in Carle Hospital, Urbana.
She was born January 15, 1941 in Oconee daughter of the late Charlie and Retha (Wyatt) Slater. Charlene married Lyle Wise in October of 1960 to which three children were born.
Charlene was a member of New Life Community Church, Pana. She had a devout Christian Faith and commitment to serve; especially to those in need. She gave countless hours to her church and food pantry. Charlene founded/started a counseling group for those impacted by drug addictions. She was the founder of Pana Nar-Anon, worked with Christian County C.E.F.S., Waste Management, Taylorville Park District, and 1st Trust Bank. Charlene loved her grandchildren and all of their friends and because of this had many adopted grandchildren. She was known as “Nan” to everyone who loved her and was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan.
Charlene is survived by her children: Todd Wise, Springfield, Ill.; Susan (Perry Mayland) Wise, Assumption, Ill.; Lila Wise, Pana, Ill.; grandchildren: Ryan (Brittney) Robinson; Rachel (Jarret) Bonfitto; Morgan (Scott) Durco; Eric Wise; four great-grandchildren with her fifth on the way; siblings: Patty Craig, Oconee, Ill.; Roy Slater, Oconee, Ill.; Merle Slater, Oconee, Ill.; James “Tom” (Kathy) Slater, Humbolt, Ill.; John “Tad” Slater, Herrick, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Lisa Wise; and sisters, Wilna Witsman and Catherine Tabor.
A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, December 11, 2020 in Oconee Mound Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Ray Natchigall officiating.
