Newlyweds need to juggle extra income and retirement savings
My husband and I are recently married and have realized we are going to owe a significant chunk of money to the IRS this year, thanks to the fact that I make significantly more than he does. I know we could still contribute to an IRA for this year, and still get the tax deduction, but we both have workplace retirement plans and therefore I don't think we qualify. We have not maxed out our 401(k) contributions, however, and I was thinking that transferring some of our savings into our 401(k)s could be a good way to lower the taxes we owe. Is this a feasible option? If not, do you have another suggestion?

Reluctance to ask financial adviser questions is red flag
Dear Helaine: A few years ago, I began working with a financial adviser I initially liked, but whose judgment I am now questioning due to communication issues. When I email him to ask a question, I receive emails back from his assistants and colleagues, whom I don't know and haven't met with directly. I am not sure he is a fiduciary, and I'm not eager to ask outright because of these communication blunders.

Good reasons to have a will
I'm a single woman in my 50s with no children, significant other or close relatives. I've never had life insurance, but I do own a condo and car.

I don't want a funeral, just a cremation and to have my ashes scattered. I've never bothered with a will because, frankly, I don't care what happens to my stuff after I die. What happens to my estate if I don't make a will? If I got hit by a bus today, there would be money left over after paying bills

The good stepmother
Hi, Helaine: My husband has a daughter and two sons, all in their 30s, from his former marriage. At various times, they've all asked him for money for things like a car or medical bills. He's given it. While the sums each child receives are not identical, they are more or less in line with each other.

Now his daughter wants to buy an apartment. He's thinking of offering her a significant sum. I'm not against the gift -- our finances are separate -- but I am concerned this rather large present will mean the sons will expect the same on principle. That's a lot of money! But if they don't get it, I'm afraid they will make her life hell. These three don't get along so well as it is.

I'm not sure how to advise my husband. Strict equality? To each according to his needs? Favorite child?
