Tornadoes outlast Eagles in season opener
“We’ve conditioned for these three games right here. That was the hardest preseason, as conditioning goes, that I’ve had in years. Just because you go back-to-back-to-back here to open the season. So you have to be ready physically for all three of those games, knowing that the energy will probably take you through the first game,” said Taylorville head coach Ryan Brown of what is expected to be a tough opening stretch. Smothers, experienced core to lead THS wrestling in 19-20
While the THS Wrestling team will return a talented core group from a year ago, there will be a some fresh new faces on the mat this year, and none will be bigger than new head coach Jake Smothers.

Smothers is a 2014 graduate of THS and had a pretty good run on the mat himself. His senior season with the Tornadoes, Smothers recorded his 100th career win and qualified for state. He was also a part of the team’s run at state in 2013. After graduation from Taylorville, Smothers would go on to wrestled for Millikin for two years. “It was an amazing experience, and I was able to learn from an undefeated national champion in Brian Birt,” he said. “I was in the room with some of the best wrestlers and coaches in the country, and, although I didn’t see as much personal success as I would have liked, I was able to learn a lot from that experience, and I think I can bring that to the mat for these kids.”

No lack of varsity experience for THS girls
A team that graduated five seniors a year ago, three who went on to play college basketball, won’t be long without varsity experience.

“Losing girls that you’ve had since they were freshman is always rough. We lost a lot of leadership in Olivia (Pruitt) and our leading scorer in Natalie (Snyder). Xanna (Tomasello) and Isabella (Thomas) were also key pieces to our offense and defense last year and we will miss their ability on the floor,” said head coach Steve Keller.

Tornado boys bowling on track for success
After sending graduating senior Brian Sklenka to State as an individual last season, the Tornado boys bowling team will be without its key piece from a year ago.

But that isn’t to say that the Tornadoes won’t be missing a big part of their team. Captain Tate Wagner, Ian Neisler, and Jonah Nagle have all been a part of the program since their freshman years and head coach Lance Nagle knows what he’ll be missing in Sklenka this season, but also is hopeful for what there is to come.

Tornadoes target 20 wins as Bergschneider chases Ridley
After back-to-back 20 wins seasons in 2017 and 2018, that threshold has now become the new benchmark for the Tornado boys basketball team. “I love the 20-win mark because that’s a culmination of an entire season. To me, that is a big part of the journey in getting better every day, and that’s what our guys are doing right now,” Taylorville head basketball coach Ryan Brown said. “The team mentality is a big part of what we talk about here, and I think this group has bought into it. We don’t want a let down, we want another 20-win season.”

After losing a trio of incredible shooters from a year ago, it would be easy to dismiss the upcoming season as a rebuilding year, but there’s a lot of talent on the floor for the Tornadoes this season.

Tornadoes fall to IVC 31-22 despite tough fight
“The way things played out in the summer and the way things played out over the school year and how many times we had to adjust on the fly and move guys around and so on and so forth. You guys did nothing but answer that call every single time. At practice everyday you guys worked hard. Any time you end a season, it’s very bittersweet. When you graduate a group of seniors who scratched and clawed, even when their buddies weren’t there and fell by the wayside, they kept showing up and kept fighting. You know why? Because they wanted something bigger than themselves. That’s what this is, it’s something bigger than yourselves,” said head coach Jeb Odam after a tough loss to the top-ranked Illinois Valley Central on Saturday.
