Taylorville, Pana to renew football rivalry Saturday
Back in the days of the Mid-State conference, Taylorville and Pana were fierce rivals on the gridiron. The Tornadoes hold the all-time series advantage with a record of 40-31-8, but Pana ruled the roost in the final years of the rivalry as they rattled off seven straight wins from 1986 through the final game in 1992.

Rain hasn’t been the best of friend to Taylorville baseball this year. Not only has it postponed numerous games for the Tornadoes, which included their trip to Busch Stadium which has now been moved to Memorial Day on Monday the 27th, but it also has postponed conference doubleheaders and the second game of their doubleheader with Lincoln on Saturday.

THS baseball bounces back from 1-hit loss, splits with Effingham
The Taylorville baseball team faced off against an NCAA Division I pitcher in Effingham’s Zach Lee Tuesday night and picked up one hit in an 11-0 loss. The Tornadoes showed their resolve in game two when they took on the Hearts’ number-two pitcher in what would ultimately be a 2-1 win for the Tornadoes. Taylorville Head Coach Brian Sample called said that second game was pitching showcase by Taylorvill’es Blake Donnan.

The Tornado soccer team played its final home game and final regular season game of the year on Monday when they hosted the Bulldogs from Mahomet-Seymour. The Tornadoes allowed five goals in the first half and just three in the second but weren’t able to score themselves as they fell 8-0.

THS honors five new inductees to Hall of Fame
Three men and two women were inducted to the Taylorville Hall of Fame on Saturday in the 24th. These inductees were Cara Dey Thomas, Lacey McFarland Glenn, Bruce Meriwether, Lance Hartley, and friend of sports Dan Barry.


The night opened with Kenny Melvin, previous Hall of Fame inductee, telling a story about his time after Taylorville. Kenny was drafted to the Coast Guard in 1943 and wasn’t able to finish his senior year. Nonetheless, Melvin returned to school and played basketball at Arkansas State College. At Arkansas State, Kenny played basketball and played against Beloit, Wisconsin in the National Tournament. “At one time, on the floor in the National Tournament, there were five different guys from Taylorville High School playing for two different universities. It was definitely something to say about the program at Taylorville and the coaching staffs and community,” he added.

Lacy McFarland graduated from Taylorville High School in 1999 and was a four year starter and letter winner on the varsity volleyball team. Team Co-Captain and MVP in 1998, Lacy was also the only Tornado selected to the Central State 8 All-Conference First Team.

Hall of Fame Spotlight: Cara Dey Thomas
Cara Dey graduated from Taylorville High School in 1992 and earned four varsity letters on the Lady Tornadoes basketball team and along the way set three individual school records in rebounding and established herself as a top ten rebounder in the State of Illinois. 30 rebounds against Sacred Heart-Griffin is a record that may never be broken. 564 rebounds during her senior year and 1149 rebounds during her career are both records still standing at THS.

TAYLORVILLE — Dan graduated from THS in 1980, and during his time in high school he was actively involved in athletics and other school activities. During his three years on the gridiron, he learned the price one had to pay for success as a member of the Tornadoes football teams coached by Hall of Famer Don Anderson that won 21 games against only 10 losses.

The Taylorville baseball team will return to Busch Stadium on Sunday as they will face off against Lutheran South at 12:00.

Lutheran South is a high school in Afton, Missouri that is 7-4 on the year as of printing and the Tornadoes are 8-4, as of printing. The Lancers are a upper-classman laden group with 10 seniors and juniors on the roster, backed by six sophomores.

After all of the rain last week, the Tornadoes and the Braves were unable to play their scheduled doubleheader on Saturday at Taylorville. Those games were moved to Tuesday instead, and the Braves were able to defeat the Tornadoes in both by scores of 10-0 and 9-1.
