Building a team takes time. There’s no sentiment more true than than for the Tornado soccer program. Tim Karbach was in his first season as head coach of the Tornadoes, despite previous coaching experience, and the Tornadoes had previously had difficulty generating enough numbers to field a full team.

“We had 16 guys come out last year, which although that isn’t a ton, that’s more than we were getting in the summer,” said Karbach about last year’s team. “Unfortunately for us, we had three season-ending injuries, and we had some other factors that ended up hurting our numbers. But, the team grew. The attitudes changed towards the good, and the skill level improved as the season went on.”

Experience to lead the way for Tornado XC
“We practiced very well last year, and we had very high team chemistry, both on the boys and girls teams last year,” said head coach Steve Walters of his 2018 squad. Fortunately, most of that group returns as Taylorville will see nine of the eleven team members  are returning runners.

Unfortunately, the Tornadoes just missed the threshold required to score a girls team; they are only one member short.

Youth movement to lead Tornado volleyball
The 2019 Tornado volleyball team will be missing six staring seniors from its roster a year ago. That hasn’t derailed expectations though as coach Kim Peabody still expects big things from her squad. She’s looking for some young players to step up in big ways.

The Tornadoes lost setter Courtney Coy; Liz Curtin, who led the team in kills and blocks; middle hitter Natalie Snyder; first-team all-conference libero Reagan Morrison; defensive specialist Maddy Brown; and fellow seniors McKenna Anderson, Shelbi Paul, and Cydnee Larson.

Mt. Zion, Effingham to be tough stretch for THS
The Tornadoes enter the season as the reigning Apollo Conference champs, but the road to a repeat won’t be easy this year.

Taylorville showed off some incredible flashes in their seven-on-seven performances this summer, and coach Jeb Odam says his squad is progressing nicely in preparation for the week-one tilt with Mt. Vernon.

Tornado football to introduce fresh faces, lean on defense
A new quarterback is always an adjustment. Replacing seven of 11 starters on offense is a complete overhaul. That’s the situation facing the 2019 Taylorville football team.

The outlook isn’t bleak though. Many members of the defense, and three offensive lineman, will be returning, and the Tornadoes run the same system at all levels of plays. Head coach Jeb Odam says there is some talent on this year’s team, and he thinks that continuity in the program will pay dividends in easing the transition. “The new guys that we will be slotting in may not have the varsity experience that those guys had last year, but they know the plays and they know what we want to run. They know our formations as well as any of those guys last year,” he said.

Millburg takes the reigns for THS golf
The Tornado golf team lost a lot last season. Not only did all of the scoring members of the team graduate, the head coach also moved on to another school as well.

After the departure of former coach Nick Gerndt, Paul Millburg thought that it was a great opportunity to step into the role. “Nick and I worked in the same department, and when he said that he wasn’t returning, I went in and talked to Paul Held. This will be my 21st year in the district, and I thought that this would be a good way to interact with the kids outside of school,” said Millburg.

Confidence key for Tornado dance team
Whether it’s before the game, during the high school fight song, at halftime doing their own routine, or after the game singing along with the “Alma Mater”, the Taylorville Dance Team always seems to front and center.

After a successful season at camp, and different competitions a year ago, head coach Heather Odam was sad to see her seniors graduate, but she says she has another great group this year.
